  5.           ThreadZ Forms Alliance with METZ Software
  6.  
  7. ThreadZ Software Design Group, Inc., developers of utilities for
  8. Microsoft Windows, and METZ Software, developers of shareware
  9. utilities for Windows, have announced the formation of a special
  10. alliance, the goal of which is to facilitate timely software
  11. development and provide easy access to solution-oriented products.
  12.  
  13. The first result of this alliance is the incorporation of two
  14. of METZ Software's shareware programs into a retail product called
  15. ThreadZ File F/X.  ThreadZ File F/X is a group of four utilities
  16. and a bonus of ThreadZ Task Manager, presented in an "a la carte"
  17. manner so as to facilitate ease of use:
  18.  
  19. F/X File Manager, simplifies the create, delete, copy, rename and
  20. move functions in Windows 3.0 using an intuitive tree directory display.
  21.  
  22. F/X File Find, a search program enabling users to locate files on
  23. any attached hard drive, provides for the use of DOS wildcards,
  24. specific file extensions, or even file creation dates as search
  25. criteria.
  26.  
  27. F/X File Undelete provides a list of deleted files, states the
  28. likelihood of a successful recovery, and, when prompted, will attempt
  29. to undelete the chosen file.
  30.  
  31. F/X Text Search allows users to search a file, path name, directory
  32. or an entire disk for a text string.  A list of matching files is
  33. displayed and may be printed as a report.
  34.  
  35. The ThreadZ Task Manager, a distinctive replacement for Windows'
  36. Task List, utilizes a menu which may be used to launch applications
  37. and lets you arrange your windows the way that works best for you!

  66.  
  67.      METZ Desktop Navigator is a comprehensive, yet easily understood
  68. file and directory manager for Microsoft Windows.
  69.      Desktop Navigator is a Windows application program that combines
  70. several important and time-saving features into one cohesive, menu
  71. operated program.  With Desktop Navigator you can quickly change drives,
  72. directories, or process files.  Powerful features such as the ability
  73. to move an entire directory tree to another directory and/or drive are
  74. also included.
  75.      Display options include a 12 or 24 hour clock on screen, a memory
  76. display that details both DOS and Expanded EMS RAM, an edit field which
  77. lets you specify the type of file to be displayed, a graphical directory
  78. tree, and a comprehensive file display.  Desktop Navigator uses about
  79. 30K of memory.
  80.  
  81.      If you like DeskNav, please register it.  Registering this
  82. application will provide you with the following benefits:  Product
  83. support, free upgrades, prioritized consideration of your requests,
  84. and the means for METZ Software to continue development of this and
  85. other MS Windows products.  Plus, the diskette you receive will

  90. fortunately, the ThreadZ File F/X applications do have both.  Also,

  95.                                  Layout
  96.   DeskNav has the following components within it's display area:
  97.  
  98.   Digital clock - displays current date and time. Configurable from the
  99.                   Configuration/DeskNav menu selection.
  100.   Free memory   - displays the size of the largest block of available
  101.                   conventional memory which is free.  If EMS 4.0 memory
  102.                   is installed, that amount which is free is displayed
  103.                   also, separated by a plus sign.  This gives you a
  104.                   good idea of how much memory remains available on your
  105.                   system.
  106.   File specification - is an edit box which allows you to specify the
  107.                   type of files to be displayed.  Wild cards and
  108.                   actual filenames are allowed.
  109.   Directory Tree - contains a graphical display of directories on the
  110.                   current drive.  Single click with mouse, or use the keypad
  111.                   to change directory selection.  Press a character to
  112.                   select the next directory beginning with that character.
  113.   Files          - listbox containing a list of files based on the file
  114.                   specification and selected directory.  This listbox
  115.                   allows multiple selection - use the shift key
  116.                   and mouse or keyboard to select more than one entry.
  117.   Status         - displays statistics regarding the listed files.
  118.  
  119.   Keyboard users - use the tab key to switch between the last three items.

  121.                                Menu items
  122.  
  123.   File:
  124.     Run:          Allows you to run an application and specify parameters.
  125.     Run with:     Allows you to run an application and pass it the selected
  126.                   files.
  127.     Status:       Displays information about the currently selected files.
  128.     Select all:   Causes all listed files to be selected.
  129.     Deselect all: Causes all selected files to be deselected.
  130.     Print:        Sends the selected files to the printer.
  131.     Copy:         Will copy the selected files to another drive/directory.
  132.     Move:         Will move the selected files to another drive/directory.
  133.     Rename:       Allows you to individually rename the selected files.
  134.     Delete:       Will delete the selected files.
  135.     Attributes:   Allows you to modify the file attributes for the selected
  136.                   files.
  137.     Sort by:      Allows you to choose the preferred file sorting method.
  138.     Exit:         Closes DeskNav.
  139.     Exit Windows: Quick exit from windows.
  140.   Directory:
  141.     Status:       Displays information about the currently selected directory.
  142.     Create:       Use to create a sub-directory under the currently selected
  143.                   directory.
  144.     Rename:       Allows you to rename the selected sub-directory.
  145.     Copy:         Copies the selected directory and all the files and
  146.                   sub-directories under that directory to a selected
  147.                   destination.  The destination can be on another drive.
  148.     Move:         Moves the selected directory and all the files and
  149.                   sub-directories under that directory to a selected
  150.                   destination.  The destination can be on another drive.
  151.     Delete:       Allows you to delete a directory and it's contents,
  152.                   which includes sub-directories and their contents.
  153.                   If the root directory is selected all files and
  154.                   subdirectories on the disk can be deleted.
  155.     Refresh:      Since it is possible for another application to modify
  156.                   the directory structure, the Refresh option will reload
  157.                   the directory tree, insuring that it is current.
  158.   Drive:          Displays all available disk drives, select the drive
  159.                   you wish to change to.
  160.     Status:       Displays drive and memory information.
  161.   Configuration:
  162.     DeskNav:      Information regarding your DeskNav preferences.  The
  163.                   default application to run will be used when you
  164.                   double click on a file that has no registered extension
  165.                   in the WIN.INI file.  NOTEPAD.EXE is the default.
  166.     Screen Saver: Configure and customize you own screen saver/blanker.
  167.     Print:        Allows you to set the DeskNav print options.
  168.     Printer Setup: Allows you to select and/or setup system printers.
  169.   Windows:
  170.     Arrange:      'Tiles' windows on the screen based on grid for
  171.                   arranging windows in the DeskNav configuration dialog.
  172.     Tile:         Positions windows on the screen using the entire screen.
  173.     Cascade:      Positions active windows from top left to bottom right
  174.                   of screen.
  175.     Clear:        Closes down all applications other than DeskNav and
  176.                   MS-Dos Executive.
  177.     Close Icons:  Closes all iconed apps other than DeskNav and MS-Dos.
  178.     Icon:         Icons all the iconable apps.
  179.     Maximize:     Zooms all apps that are active and can be zoomed.
  180.     Optimize:     Sizes all apps to use the optimal desktop area.
  181.     Restore:      Sends the Restore system menu command to all apps.
  182.  
  183.   Utilities:
  184.     File Finder:  Allows you to specify a file (wild cards are allowed) to
  185.                   search for and the drives to search.  Files found are
  186.                   listed in the files listbox, and can be operated upon
  187.                   by the File menu options.
  188.     Lock System:  Password protect your system while you are not using it.
  189.  
  190.   Tools:
  191.     Customize:    Allows you to customize the Tools menu.  Update lets
  192.                   you add applications to the Tools pulldown menu and
  193.                   choose from several execution options.
  194.  
  195.                             Using DeskNav
  196.      With the directory tree containing a list of directories, you can
  197. easily move about within your system.  Use a mouse to scroll and select
  198. directories.  Use your cursor keys, or press the first character of the
  199. desired directory.
  200.      Once you have selected a directory you can then select one or more
  201. files from the right hand listbox (to do so, hold down the shift key
  202. while selecting the files).  Press enter (or double click with mouse) to
  203. have all the selected files executed.  Or, you can use the Files menu to
  204. process your selections.
  205.      The File Copy/Move functions will deselect or remove each file as
  206. it is processed from the right hand listbox.  If the destination disk
  207. becomes full, the remaining files will still be selected so that you
  208. may continue with the operation.  File attributes are automatically
  209. processed.
  210.  
  211.      Running Non-Windows applications from DeskNav may require
  212. an appropriate .PIF file (see the Microsoft Windows Users Guide).
  213. Select the .PIF file to run instead of the .EXE or .COM file.
  214.  
  215.                        Non-registered users
  216.      Use for purposes other than evaluation requires payment of the
  217. registration fee.  Once you register and receive a license number you are
  218. automatically allowed to upgrade to future releases.  It is important
  219. that you register this application to help insure continued support and
  220. development.  Our intention is to provide useful, user-friendly
  221. applications at a low cost, and your support helps make that possible.
  222.      All available functionality is enabled in this version to provide
  223. you with the ability to effectively evaluate this application.

  248.      METZDLL.EXE is a link library for DeskNav.  It must be located
  249. somewhere in your environment path.  We recommend placing it in your
  250. Windows directory.  (METZDLL.EXE is also used by other METZ Software
  251. applications)

  295.   the destination drive and directory.  If the directory you enter
  296.   does not exist, DeskNav will automatically create it.  You can
  297.   also specify a different drive if you wish.
  298. * Printer setup has been added to the configuration menu.
  299. * The file DESKNAV.DND has been changed to TREE.DND for future
  300.   compatibility with other products.  This file is placed in your
  301.   root directory by DeskNav and contains a list of the directories
  302.   on your drive.  When this file exists, DeskNav uses it rather
  303.   than taking the time to scan the drive for directories.
  304. * This version has an implementation which will prevent screen saver
  305.   timeouts while you are working in a DOS application under Windows.
  306.   In the past, this application would timeout even if you were actively
  307.   typing away within a DOS Window.  Now the timeout will occur
  308.   only after you are inactive in any DOS Window as well.
  309.   Please read METZTSR.TXT and install the METZTSR.COM application
  310.   if you wish to prevent timeouts while you are working in a
  311.   DOS Window.  METZTSR has been tested on several different
  312.   platforms and we have not experienced any incompatibilities.
  313. * DeskNav now abbreviates it's title bar while iconic.  This should
  314.   improve the icon appearance under Windows 3.0.
  315. * An Exit option has been added to the File menu.  This option
  316.   closes DeskNav.
  317. * A Deselect all option has been added to the File menu.  This option
  318.   will deselect all hilited files.
  319. * A Tile option has been added to the Windows menu.
  320. * A Sort by option has been added to the File menu.  The sort option
  321.   you choose will remain in effect until it is changed again.
  322.   Sorting the file list will not cause the current selections to
  323.   be lost.
  324. * The included Clp2File.exe is an application which will save a
  325.   bitmap from the clipboard to a file, which then can be displayed
  326.   by the screen blanker.  Please see CLP2FILE.TXT for more info.
  327. * The free memory display now displays the total free memory when
  328.   running Windows 3.0.
  329. * When you Lock the system under Windows 3.0, the Cancel button
  330.   can no longer be selected while locked.
  331. * The directory rename should now work with DOS 4.0.
  332. * Clear Icons and Close Icons no longer closes Program Manager
  333.   when running under Windows 3.0.
  334. * The print option will now wordwrap correctly.  Previous versions
  335.   would break words across lines.
  336. * The Drive pulldown menu now takes into account dynamically added
  337.   Network drives.
  338. * When copying or moving files, the disk space available calculation
  339.   was not taking into account the size of the same file on the
  340.   destination drive.  This has been fixed.
  341. * The file list interface has been changed somewhat.  Double clicking
  342.   on a file will execute only that file.  If you wish to run all the
  343.   selected files at once, press the enter key.
  344. * DeskNav now supports international characters.  Should you find
  345.   a situation that doesn't, please let us know.
  346. * A divide by zero error problem with the screen saver has been fixed.
  347. * DeskNav can be used as the shell.
  348.   Under Windows 3.0:
  349.     DeskNav can be used in replacement of the Microsoft Program Manager.
  350.     Change the 'shell=progman.exe' setting in the file SYSTEM.INI to
  351.     'shell=desknav.exe'.  DeskNav will also launch the applications
  352.     listed on the LOAD and RUN lines of your WIN.INI file.
  353.   Under Windows 2.0:
  354.     Type WIN :DESKNAV to use DeskNav as the shell.  The MS-DOS Executive
  355.     will not be loaded.   DeskNav will also launch the applications
  356.     listed on the LOAD and RUN lines of your WIN.INI file.

  358.                          Version 2.44
  359. * The right hand listbox containing the list of files had an infrequent
  360.   update problem when you select between directories containing only a few
  361.   files.  Occasionally, some of the files from the previously selected
  362.   directory were not cleared from the display.  This has been fixed.
  363. * A resource conflict prevented both DeskNav and Desktop from running
  364.   at the same time under Windows 3.0.  This has been fixed.
  365.  
  366.                          Version 2.43
  367. * The Exit Windows menu item now works under Windows 3.0.
  368. * Some users with memory boards/drivers (usually in 286 machines)
  369.   were experiencing an application error under protect mode.

  390. * The fix in 2.3 to allow changing drives when the current drive was
  391.   a floppy drive with the diskette removed, wound up causing
  392.   a worse problem when you selected a floppy drive without a diskette.
  393.   The change has been removed and will be researched further.

  396. * DeskNav now displays file and disk status at the bottom of the
  397.   display area.  This feature can be disabled from the DeskNav
  398.   Configuration dialog.  The display is as follows:
  399.   ##/## files= ##/## bytes (## disk space free)
  400.   Number of selected files / files in current list = total bytes of
  401.   selected files / total bytes in current list ( total disk space free )
  402. * DeskNav could not change drives when the current drive was a floppy
  403.   and there was no diskette present.  The problem has been fixed
  404.   making it possible to select another drive without error.
  405. * DeskNav now has a Tools menu option.  The tools menu allows you
  406.   to place your favorite applications under this menu, so that you
  407.   may quickly access them.
  408. * The Tools Update option allows you to modify your tools menu and
  409.   configure each item.
  410.   For example, to add an entry to your tools menu, select the Tools
  411.   Update menu item, which will cause the Tool manager dialog to appear.
  412.   From the Tool manager dialog, select the Add pushbutton, and the
  413.   Tool add/modify dialog will appear.  Fill in the fields as follows:
  414.   Menu entry:    This is the text that appears under the Tools menu,
  415.                  so type in something descriptive.  An '&' character
  416.                  will cause the character following it to be underlined,
  417.                  so if you want an '&' to appear, type in '&&'.  (The
  418.                  single ampersand tells windows to use the underlined
  419.                  character for keyboard menu selection, which you may
  420.                  find useful.)
  421.   Application:   This is the application to be run when the Menu Entry
  422.                  is selected.  Be sure to specify the full path if the
  423.                  application is not found in your environment path.
  424.   Select:        This button will allow you to select an application,
  425.                  and will automatically fill in the application field
  426.                  and description (if blank).
  427.   Parameters:    Optional parameters to be passed to the application.
  428.                  You can specify command line options and/or an input
  429.                  filename here.  Use the full filname path whenever
  430.                  you can.
  431.   Options:
  432.     Run only
  433.        - The Application is to be run using only the specified parameters
  434.          (if any).
  435.     Prompt for a file
  436.        - Before running the application, DeskNav will ask for an input file.
  437.          Select this when you want to be prompted for an input file
  438.          whenever you select this entry from the tools menu.
  439.     Run with first selected file
  440.        - DeskNav will run the application and pass it the first file
  441.          selected in the DeskNav files listbox.
  442.     Run with every selected file
  443.        - DeskNav will run the application with each file selected
  444.          in the DeskNav files listbox.  So if you select five files
  445.          and Notepad is the tool application selected, Notepad will
  446.          be run five times and passed each of the selected files.
  447. * The File menu now has a 'Run with...' option.  This function will
  448.   pass the selected files to a specified application.
  449.   The 'Run against one file at a time' checkbox will cause the
  450.   application to be run with each of the files individually, rather
  451.   than passing all of the filenames at once.
  452.   With this function you should be able to set up a .PIF file for
  453.   a DOS application like PKZIP, then select that .PIF file as the
  454.   application and the files which you wish to pass in as parameters.
  455.   There is a command line limitation of 120 characters.  The command
  456.   line consists of parameters and filename(s).  DeskNav will display
  457.   an error message if the command line is too long.
  458. * The File menu now has a Print option.  All selected files will
  459.   be sent to the printer regardless of their type or size.  Normally,
  460.   you will only want to print ascii text files with this function.
  461.   Lines will be wrapped if they are wider than the printer page.
  462.   A cancel dialog does appear while DeskNav is printing each file so
  463.   that you can interrupt the process.
  464. * There also is a Configuration Print dialog so that you can configure
  465.   how DeskNav prints a file.  Select 'Line Wrap' when you want lines
  466.   which are longer than the paper width, to be wrapped to the next line
  467.   (this is the default).
  468.   Set the 'Tabstops' value to indicate what the tabstop interval is.
  469.   (A value of 0 will remove tabs from the output.)
  470. * The File menu now has a Status option.  File Status displays
  471.   information pertaining to the files listed by DeskNav.
  472.   Disk space used is the amount of disk space actually taken up by
  473.   the files.
  474. * The Directory menu now has a Status option.  Directory Status displays
  475.   information pertaining to the selected directory.
  476.   Disk space used is the amount of disk space actually taken up by
  477.   the files.
  478. * The Drive menu now has a Status option.  Drive Status displays
  479.   memory and disk information.
  480. * The copy/move process now displays remaining disk space on the
  481.   destination drive.  (Moving files to a destination on the same
  482.   drive does not affect disk space, so the space remaining is not
  483.   displayed.)
  484. * The configuration dialogs have been resized to fit on CGA screens.
  485. * Delete Directory did not update the files listbox properly when
  486.   the root directory was processed.
  487. * Create, Make, and Rename Directory now tell other instances of DeskNav
  488.   to update their directory trees if they are using the same drive.
  489. * You can now copy/move directories to multiple floppy disks.  DeskNav
  490.   will ask for the next disk when there is insufficient space on the
  491.   current destination floppy drive.  The supporting directory tree
  492.   structure will be created when necessary as well.
  493. * The Destination dialog directory tree now supports keyboard input.
  494.  
  495.                           Version 2.2
  496. * File copy/move - because attributes were being set and reset, a write
  497.   protected disk caused a 'Write Protected' error message to be displayed.
  498.   DeskNav now will only display a 'Write Protected' error when you try
  499.   to move files from a write protected disk.  Files cannot be deleted
  500.   on a write protected disk.
  501. * A move/copy directory selection has been added.  This function will
  502.   move or copy the selected directory, subdirectories, and files to
  503.   a selected drive and destination directory (root is allowed).
  504.   This function does not support copying or moving a directory to
  505.   more than one floppy diskette at this time.  We will prioritize
  506.   adding such support based on registered user requests.
  507.   The source directory is appended to the destination directory.  If
  508.   the destination directory already has a subdirectory by the same
  509.   name as the source, the files are moved to the matching sub-directory.
  510. * The options available when you select a destination drive for the
  511.   file or directory move/copy function are:
  512.     Automatically replace files - when selected, each file by the same
  513.        name in the source and destination directories will automatically
